Pharmaceutical companies which manufacture and distribute medicines and medical devices must ensure that they comply with current Good Manufacturing Practices or cGMP. GMP is used to ensure that the quality of drugs is kept high enough to avoid health risks. Every month there is new legislation falling under cGMP because new drugs are created and technology keeps getting better. It would be impossible for a pharmaceutical company to keep up with all of these new regulations unless they made use of GMP consulting.

Pharmaceutical companies can either hire an employee to focus on their GMP compliance or use an independent firm. The latter choice is the best for sever reasons.

The money you spend on an independent consultant is lower than the salary you would have to pay a full time employee. You will only need between two and four consultancy meetings per year unless there are major developments. If you were to permanently hire someone you are looking at an average salary of £60,000.

There are more reasons than price to choose independent. A GMP consulting firm’s collective knowledge will be 100 times greater than 1 member of staff. Their technical experience as well as their knowledge of science and drugs is immense. Comparing one in-house staff member to a whole consultancy firm will show you that you get more experience with the latter.

All features of business are addresses. The regulatory bodies which govern the company needs to be communicated with at times of audits, inspections and warning letters which they can advise on. Troubleshooting is addresses whenever a new system or new rule is brought in which effects the company’s production process. They can also help and advise with any legal problems. Validation, which is a major aspect of drug development and GMP, can also be worked on so that companies can keep excellent records of everything they have manufactured.

No pharmaceutical company would be able to stay on top of every new GMP regulation without the aid of GMP consulting firms. There is simply too much knowledge and experience required which a company would have to pay hundreds of thousands of pounds for if they were to hire permanent staff.
