The symptoms of a bladder infection can often be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Many people experience urinary tract infections on a regular basis, one every few months. Whilst there may be an underlying reason for this, such as undiagnosed diabetes, for many it is simply down to a poor hygiene practices and daily life. Women are more likely to suffer from UTIs than men because of the design of their reproductive system and the shorter length of the urethra.
So Why do we get UTIs? The urinary tract can become infected in two ways; from the top or from the bottom. It is rare for older children and adults to have top-caused infections however. All parts of the urinary tract can get infected including the urethra, bladder, ureter and the kidneys in severe cases. In the long term this can cause kidney failure and dangerously low blood pressure levels.
Bacteria enter the urethra through the meatus for several reasons. The bacteria in faeces can cause UTIs in children who wear nappies as it is in close proximity to the meatus for an extended time. Girls who wipe back-to-front are at greater risk of developing a UTI as any bacteria around the anus is moved towards the meatus. The friction experienced during intercourse can also be a factor in UTIs which is why urination is recommended after sex.
These are the most common factor in UTIs although there are many others. Pain during urination is the biggest symptom of a UTI but sufferers can also experience pain just above the pelvic bone, blood in their urine and lower back pain. It is possible that no symptoms present themselves when a UTI is present, which can either lead to it fixing itself or serious health problems down the line.
For mild infections you can take cranberry capsules and the supplements can be taken as a preventative as well because they contain high levels of antioxidants. Cranberries have natural qualities which can prevent UTIs from developing and reduce the pain and discomfort you might feel when suffering from an infection. If you are in extreme pain and you notice blood in your urine it is a good idea to visit your doctor as they will be able to point you towards the right course of treatment. There is no harm in taking cranberry capsules if you regularly suffer from UTIs and you could see a dramatic reduction in the symptoms.
