It may seem a bit confusing initially, but there is a difference between regular dentists and cosmetic dentists. They do have a few things in common, but each group has fundamental differences in the types of services they offer to their patients. If you do not know what a cosmetic dentist does, or have a few questions regarding what type of specialty services they offer, then you may want to keep on reading.

A dentist provides the basics of oral care along with specialty treatments. He or she removes teeth, can perform root canals and even provide dentures or other artificial teeth. Cosmetic dentists can also provide bridges and dentures, but they are more specialized in the appearance of teeth versus their functionality. They do this through a variety of methods such as whitening teeth, providing veneers for the surface of the teeth or through bonding practices.

The one common factor among cosmetic dentistry is that they use a professional teeth whitening system to make your smile a few shades brighter. Over time, the color of your teeth begins to darken. The reasons can range from medicines to typical daily use and beverage consumption. Tooth bleaching is a popular way to give the face a youthful appearance by lightening the color to an acceptable range. This procedure is done in the office and can even be achieved in one visit. But the cosmetic dentist and his or her staff can provide you with other services as well.

Bridges, crowns, inlays and porcelain veneers are other services that can give you back your beautiful smile. If you have teeth that are a bit crooked, orthodontia may be needed in order to straighten the them. A cosmetic dentist may refer you to an Orthodontist or be able to provide veneers that give the appearance of an even smile. This process may also be known as Bonding. The entire Bonding process, as well as in depth procedures such as bridges or crowns, will take a few visits in order to correct the smile.

For whiter teeth and a brighter smile, cosmetic dentists are definitely worth researching. You may be lucky enough that your regular dentist can perform cosmetic procedures to give you back a smile to be envied by others. At the very least, he or she may be able to refer you to a cosmetic dentist in your area. Most cosmetic dentist professionals offer a free visit to assess the procedures you may need. It is worth scheduling a visit.
