How to Talk to Your Physician About Everything Including Those Hard to discuss Health Problems
Bruce was starting to resent the foot infection that had prevented him from going swimming all summer long. He had been seeing a doctor who had prescribed antibiotics and also a round of steroids but the infection persisted and was not only painful but unsightly as well. He heard about a new procedure for the treatment of toenail fungus and was anxious to see how it worked so he scheduled a timeslot for himself close by at a clinic specializing in this particular problem. Offering the only Long Island pinpointe laser toenail treatment made this health center exceptional so he was willing to wait to get an appointment but Bruce knew it would be worth it if he could get rid of his problem once and for all.
Unfortunately, pesky health problems like the one described above happen to all of us at one time or another and occasionally they are hard to get rid of unless a person is willing to seek medical attention on a regular basis. Some of the more embarrassing maladies are sometimes not reported to a family doctor until they have taken hold and have become difficult to eliminate. A person should never let any health problem or complaints go unreported simply due to the fact that it may be embarrassing to talk about with the physician. Doing so can put a person at risk for complications and extend painful repercussions from the problem at hand. Some suggestions for talking to a doctor about those embarrassing situations are as follows:
• Develop an easy rapport with your doctor – It is much easier to discuss any topic with your doctor when you have made the effort to establish a good rapport with him or her prior to having any problems. When conversation comes easily, it heightens the chances that a patient will be honest when a doctor inquires if there are any new problems to report when being examined for a regular checkup.
• Write things down – Taking the time to compose a description of an embarrassing health problem or new development regarding an old one can take the pressure off if a patient truly dreads a face to face conversation with his or her doctor. This note can then be given to the physician for him to read and then it will be up to him to ask relevant questions rather than the patient initiating the conversation.
• Describe the problem when scheduling the appointment – When calling in to schedule an appointment with the doctor, a patient can go through the ordeal of describing the problem so that the receptionist or nurse can make a detailed account for the doctor to read before he even enters the examination room.
• Have a healthy attitude toward your own body – Often a patient can make more out of a health situation that happens to all of us at one time or another. When a healthy attitude is in play concerning your own body it is much easier to discuss any problems that may arise because you will be aware that is just what happens to everyone.
