Majority opinion seems to be that soft drinks are by definition unhealthy. But might this be a myth?

In the United States, we have flavored carbonated drinks which we call soda pop. What gives soda pop its “fizz?” Carbonation.

The quality and different tastes of various carbonated drinks, including soft drinks, is caused by the amount of dissolved CO2 which causes carbonic acid in the drink.  Click here for more carbonated water information.

In most soft drinks, carbonation gives these drinks their distinctive taste. That fizzy taste is caused by diluted carbonic acid, not by the bubbles, as many believe.

Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water, is plain water into which CO2 gas has been dissolved, and is the major ingredient of most “soft drinks”.

These drinks were made in the past by putting water in a seltzer bottle at home and adding CO2. Club soda, often identical to plain carbonated water, may sometimes contain a small amount of salt or trace minerals. Home-made soda pop could taste more salty than normal because of these trace ingredients. Want some good old soda pop? Just add some drops of concentrated flavors.

If it has enough mineral content, the drink is referred to as sparkling water. At allfreightfree.com you can find a large assortment of calorie-free flavors to jazz up sparkling water with great tastes. Instead of drinking a greater amount of soda pops, this might be a great option for your family.

Carbonated drinks marketed as diet soda offer a calorie-free way to make sure your family drinks plenty of water; after all, we all know that the better drinks taste, the more kids will drink, and the more your kids drink, the healthier it is for your family.

If anyone in your family plays sports, this flavored drink will also make sure they stay properly hydrated while exercising. This has been an extremely hot summer; in spite of the heat, two-a-day football practices are already underway for most college and high school players. Perhaps, football mom, you could provide the team flavored carbonated drinks and make sure everyone drinks the amounts that they need and stays well hydrated. The kids will love you and perhaps the coach will too. This might be a good project for one of the booster clubs to take on.

The extreme temperatures made it a dangerous summer even in Texas, which is used to hot summers; and has made drinking water extremely important. Most of us, however, are not accustomed to day after humid day of 100-degrees-plus temperatures; infants and the elderly are especially vulnerable.

It is plain that not all soft drinks are the same. Flavored carbonated drinks, then, are a good option for you and your family, and perhaps for your elderly neighbor, too. We are, after all, our brother’s keeper.
