Unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, work is something you have to do to keep a roof over your head. If the office chair your company provides does not do support the spine properly, ask your boss if you can bring your own. Sit with your butt touching the back of the chair, shoulders back, feet flat on the floor, and your knees even with your hips. Sitting this way helps to distribute your bodyweight evenly, and prevents excess pressure on the spine.

Don’t slump your shoulders forward, or sit with the spine in a “C” position. Keeping your spine straight may be difficult at first, but doing exercises that strengthen the midsection muscles will improve your posture over time. Also, step away from your desk every thirty minutes to stretch. This will prevent your back from getting stiff.

Wear the Comfortable Shoes that Won’t Hurt Your Back
Ill-fitting shoes can contribute to lower back pain, so if your job requires you to stand up, invest in a pair of flat shoes that support the feet properly. Stand with your feet slightly apart, knees bent, and your shoulders straight. Don’t scoot your neck forward; instead, keep your head centered above the shoulders, and allow your arms to relax naturally at your side.

Don’t Bend at the Waist when You Lift Things
Lifting improperly is one of the biggest culprits of muscle strain. So adhering to proper lifting procedures when you are on the job will help reduce the risk of back pain. To lift heavy objects, stand with your feet slightly apart, tighten your abdominal muscles, squat down, and hold the object close to your body. Never bend at the waist to lift things, and if an object is too heavy, find someone to help.

Some types of jobs are tough on the back, so to keep back pain from ruining your ability to work, and support your family financially, always wear proper shoes, and adhere to proper sitting, lifting, and standing techniques.
