Powerball is a handheld gyro ball that is around the same size as a Baseball or Tennis Ball, being 7cm in diameter and weighing about 0.26 kg. The “ball” consists of a plastic external covering, frequently with a rubber grip around the middle. Contained inside there is a finely engineered and accurately crafted gyroscope with a rotor that rotates swiftly once the ball has been started either by a rip cord or electronic starter. The basic theory centres around how gyroscopes interact on the environment about them. Once initialized, the gyroscope will exert inertia and centrifugal forces on any objects it is in contact with. If a slanting movement is applied to the gyroscope while it is turning, then this will cause it to precess and turn in a more circular fashion. The inside of the gadget is grooved near the axle, so with an exterior applied force, the axle will push against the rim. The gyroscope will respond with a rolling movement and the speed of the rotating will rise. To generate a greater resistive force from the gyroscope on muscles, you move your wrist in a spherical motion, producing the force to gradually increase the speed and force produced by the device.

Apart from some devices with a revolutions per minute counter, no batteries and electricity is utilized in the gadget so the Powerball gyro is a truly dynamic object. The ball works in both directions so you can move your wrist in either a clockwise or anticlockwise manner to produce motion with the powerball. As you raise the speed of the gadget and the number of revolutions per minute, then the level of dynamic torsion operating on your wrist and arm muscles gets greater and is dependant on the arm orientation and rotation. With practice, speeds greater than 15,000 rpm’s can be generated.
