Anxiety Pysical Symptoms: Things to Know
Are you aware of anxiety physical symptoms and how to recognize these symptoms in your own life? Most everyone suffers from anxiety from time to time. People with anxiety or panic disorder usually have these symptoms more severly and more frequently.
Sometimes the symptoms are so severe that they can even send a person to the emergency room thinking they have a real physical ailment. Many people feel like they are dying or like they’re having a heart attack or can’t breathe. They are often told there is nothing wrong and sent home from the hospital which can make the panic and anxiety worse.
There isn’t a real physical cause of the problem but anxiety can still manifest real physical symptoms. Here are some of the most common physical symptoms people can experience from anxiety. Shortness of breath is one of the most common physical symptoms of anxiety.
Not getting enough air in the lungs is another way that this symptom is described. You may feel that you are suffocating. Symptoms like these can cause panic and fear because the person feels they will die from lack of oxygen. They feel like the are dangerous and threatening, even though they physically are not, making the sensations more scary.
Another common physical symptom is muscle tension. Many things can cause muscle tension but if you have panic disorder or anxiety disorder, you may chronic muscle tension. It can happen so often that you forget what it feels like to have relaxed muscles.
Progressive muscle relaxation (PMR) is believed to help relieve muscle tension, like that from panic and anxiety. You have fewer anxious feelings when your body is in a relaxed state due to less muscle tension.
Frequent headaches are another anxiety physical symptom. A large percentage of people who suffer from panic disorder get frequent headaches. They may attribute these headaches to something else when in reality they just need to learn a way to deal with their anxiety to make the headaches go away. According to one study, problem headaches were present in two out of three patients with panic disorder.
People with anxiety also suffer from GI, gastrointestinal symptoms. These could include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and more. When no medical cause can be found, it is often referred to as “functional GI symptoms”.
Many studies have shown that there is a link between depression, anxiety and functional GI symptoms. Studies show that about 40% of people with anxiety also have chest pain. Discomfort and chest pain are also commonly listed as anxiety symptoms.
If you feel you have anxiety physical symptoms, you should speak to your doctor right away to make sure your symptoms are from anxiety and to rule out any physical causes. Then your doctor can talk to you about your treatment options for your anxiety and how you can begin to take control of your panic and live a normal life again.
