The Essential Issues in An Effective Alcoholism Intervention
What are the essential components in a successful alcohol intervention? Why do some alcohol interventions succeed as predicted while several bomb?
The Need for An Established Reputation of Intervention Success
Scientific investigation shows that a successful alcohol intervention needs to be managed by an intervention professional who has a recognized history of intervention success.
Essentially this means that instead of making a choice for an “everyday” alcohol dependency counselor or psychologist for an alcohol abuse intervention, the person who is chosen to supervise the intervention needs to be educated in alcohol dependency intervention procedures and needs to display a reputation of “winning” alcohol interventions.
A Few Essential Examples of The Most Productive Time For an Alcoholism Intervention
Scientific study and alcoholism facts about interventions has also made obvious the fact that the most favorable time for an alcoholism intervention is following a special “happening” in the life of the alcohol dependent person or abusive drinker. The following represents a few examples of these kinds of significant incidents:
- The alcohol dependent individual or alcohol abuser has been caught stealing something of value.
- The abusive drinker or alcohol addicted individual has been caught lying about something of consequence.
- The alcohol addicted individual or abusive drinker has been locked up for driving under the influence.
In situations like these, the alcohol-dependent person or alcohol abuser is more likely to be regretful or to feel ashamed, thusly making him or her more receptive to getting the professional alcohol counseling that he or she needs.
At this juncture, moreover, it is also important to stress the fact that the abusive drinker or alcoholic needs to be sober during the alcohol dependency intervention. To put it briefly, if the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted person is intoxicated during an alcohol dependency intervention, the lack of success is virtually certain.
Furthermore, scientific inquiry has also made evident the fact that the abusive drinker or alcohol addicted person has to at least try to listen to what is communicated in an alcohol intervention. Stated more specifically, during an alcohol abuse intervention, the alcohol abuser or alcohol-dependent person needs to listen to what his or her drinking difficulties have done to those who care for him or her the most.
The Necessity of Alcohol Treatment For the Hazardous Drinker
And lastly, scientific analysis makes obvious the fact that the essential reason for an alcohol addiction intervention in the first place is to persuade the abusive drinker or alcoholic to get the quality alcoholism rehab that is required. Stated more explicitly, even if the individual who monitors the intervention has an incredible profile of fruitful interventions and even if the hazardous drinker or alcohol dependent individual frankly listens to every word that is spoken during the course of an intervention, if the abusive drinker or alcohol-dependent person is not moved to seek quality alcohol abuse therapy after the alcoholism intervention, then the intervention will be a disaster.
Plainly all of these factors are needed for a successful alcohol addiction intervention. If, on the other hand, the abusive drinker or alcohol dependent individual is not stimulated to request alcohol addiction treatment after listening to his or her family members express the pain, irritation, and regret they feel about the alcohol abuser’s or alcoholic’s irresponsible drinking behavior and the affection they feel for the problem drinker, then every other phase of the alcohol abuse intervention will to a large extent be pointless.
Even Successful Alcohol Dependency Interventions Can Go Wrong Down the Road
It also needs to be highlighted that in the face of the fact that the alcohol abuse intervention can be identified as effective in that it helped put the alcohol abuser or alcohol dependent individual in a more “open” mindset and genuinely helped the alcohol dependent individual or abusive drinker decide that he or she needed alcohol rehabilitation or professional help for alcoholism or alcohol abuse, the simple reality that the intervention occurred may lead to resentment, wrath, and doubt down the road.
In a word, even when addiction interventions are seen as productive in the short term, in the long run, however, they may fail and, hence, might make the family and/or the alcohol abuser’s situation even worse than it was before the alcoholism intervention was initiated.
No matter how inequitable or incongruous this seems, try to keep in mind that it is essentially one of the key alcohol facts that has to be addressed when undertaking an alcohol intervention.
